Blazhevich's 70 Studies forTuba has been a staple of the tuba's basic pedagogical repertoire for more than eighty years. The Blazhevich studies have long been recognized as particularly effective for low-register practice. However, we believe this perspective offers a narrow view of the études’ broader potential. As you explore these pieces anew, consider the following:
• Every major and minor key is represented across the seventy études in the order of sharps and flats. Use these études not only to study specific keys related to your repertoire but also as an organized way to review scales and arpeggios.
• A wide variety of meters appears throughout the études. When you encounter challenging meters in solo or ensemble music, identify similar metric patterns in Blazhevich’s studies to refine your focus and develop a stronger “feel” for these aspects of performance.
